More fish stuff

It's getting late. I had the option of leaving work four hours early tonite and took it. My original thought was to see about picking up the black moors on the way home but a call to my resident fish expert informed me that there hasn't been enough time for good bacteria to grow in the tank. Either it must cycle for a month with no fish or we must add the good bacteria manually (which I thought we already did.) So instead I did that tonite and watched the snail climb up and down the longish plants near the Roman columns.

I got a lot accomplished tonite but very little of it was interesting. Right now I'm washing my fourth or fifth load of laundry and I've already dried, folded and put away the rest. I've finally Finally assembled and packed the next package for the SWE but due to finances I must wait until payday to actually mail it. The additional things I was making – or rather, trying to make – just didn't work out and I didn't want to waste any more time practicing since the box was already overdue. I put a few things away, downloaded and burned sacredspud's B-Fest CD and played with Carter before feeding him.

I'm really looking forward to filling my aquarium. A year ago I poo-poohed the idea of pets whenever someone suggested it because I figured I just wouldn't have the time to devote to them that they deserved. Fish, you don't need to cuddle and play with every day to keep them healthy and happy. It took a while but I'm confident now that these won't die when left under my care. I certainly hope not considering how much I've already invested in the setup.

Yes, money is going to be tight for a while, at least until the end of the week. Then I still have to watch it because mortgage is due before V-day and there's a heavy credit card bill coming up because I forgot to put a new book of checks in my checkbook when I bought the lamps from the Elves' Palace going out of business sale and half of the aquarium supplies over the weekend. Naughty naughty, Evil.

That reminds me of a gimmick I heard of back in high school directed at young people with newfound financial freedom. Someone proposed the idea of a credit card “condom.” It's just a small paper envelope just big enough for a standard credit card. There may have been something printed on the outside but the point was to make the user think twice about actually using the card while removing it from the paper. I still regard the idea as both clever and dumb, but it's often in the back of my mind whenever I whip out the old plastic. I guess it worked.

I'm really trying not to write about the tank or fish tonite but that's been among my prime focuses this weekend. I don't know how much of a hobby it will become but it's a welcome change in my home that has been so quiet and still for the past year. Before folding the last load of laundry I sat in the shadows of the darkened living room illuminated only by the churning waters. It was relaxing to sit and gaze at the scenery I had created and watch the plants undulate and the snail crawl about even if there were not fish inside. I must have a psychological addiction to peaceful scenes and sounds.

It's very relaxing here in the dark computer room (it's after Carter's bedtime) and writing while listening to Secret of Mana +. I don't think I would have done much of anything at home had I stayed all the way until quitting time tonite. I'm happy to see The Secret of Mana has made it into another journal this week. It really is one of my all-time favourite games and sometimes I wish I could go back to the first time I played it all the way through. It's still available thanks to emulators and other devoted fans who continue to keep the story alive, but it's so old now and I miss having people to share it with. matt_william introduced me to it years ago. We never really played two-player (it was the first game, I think, to support a three-player mode for the SNES) but we played it through at the same time and were both familiar with the boy's adventures. Actually, I was still hooked on it long after he had moved on to other things. I remember a long time ago he owed me a few dollars and we agreed on the game strategy guide as payment. I still have the book; it's in the magazine holder by my bed. ^_^

I'm rambling. I'm tired, but it's a good tired. I'm hoping for regular updates this week. I have a little more free time in the evenings now that Thea has started her new job. This should help keep me occupied during the meanwhilst. I think for now I will post this and perhaps watch one more episode of Tsukuyomi Moon Phase before crawling into my freshly made bed. The newly dry towels can wait until morning to fold. I need a break.
